About this product
Compost for acid-loving plants is an acidic growing medium with a deliberately low pH. Ordinary garden soil suits most plants, but for rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries, heathers, hydrangeas and conifers it is too neutral.
Why this matters so much: at the wrong acidity the plant cannot take up iron, even when there is enough of it in the soil. The leaf turns yellow while the veins stay green; this is called chlorosis, and feeding will not cure it. Acidic compost keeps the pH in the right range so iron stays available to the plant. With blue hydrangeas, acidity has one more effect: it decides whether the flowers come out blue or pink.

Advice from our agronomist
Dig the hole wider, not deeper. Rhododendron and blueberry roots are shallow: a wide 50-60 cm hole beats a deep pit.
No lime. Ash, lime and concrete run-off raise the pH and cancel out the acidic compost — keep them away from these plants.
Mulch with pine bark. A bark layer holds moisture and acidifies as it breaks down, so the acidity lasts for years.
